Le jeudi, jor Sct-André, des le matin, je m'en allé à Vallongnes, Cantepye avecques moy. Tot le jor je n'en bougé. Il pleut merveilleusement, tant que la court de chez Denys emplit d'eaue. Je disné et souppé avec les sieurs Davernes et Bosroyer, les verdiers de Vallongnes et Cherbourg, maistre Pierre Collas, l'arpenteur et plusieurs. L'esleu Pinard y souppet. Je perdy à jouer au flus, tant apprès disner que apprès soupper, LXII x. ............. LII s.

Thursday, St. Andrew's day, in the morning, I went to Valognes, Cantepye with me. All day I did not move from there. It rained incredibly, so much that the courtyard at the Denys place was filled with water. I dined and supped with the lords Davernes and Bosroyer, the foresters of Valognes and Cherbourg, master Peter Collas, the surveyor, and several [others]. The élu¹ Pinard supped there. I lost playing at flus(?)², as much after dinner as after supper, 42 sous. ........... 52 sous.

1. an "elu" is an official, mostly responsible for tax assessment

Le mercredi, le XVIIII^e, apprès avoir desjeune céans, toute la compagnée, nos allasmes voyer une vente au mont de Bavent, l'austre près la verrerye, et l'austre en la garde de la Roque d'Auberville et de la disner à Vallongnes. Appres disner, les adjudications se fisrent en la cohue; ce faict, viron soleil couché, je party à m'en venir, Cantepye, Moisson, et Lajoye avecques moy. Il estoyt une heure de nuict quand nous arrivasmes céans.

Wednesday, the 29th, after having breakfasted here, all the company, we went to see a wood lot to be cut at hill of Bavent, the other near the glassworks, and the other in the care of La Roque d'Auberville and from there to dine at Valognes. After dinner, the adjudications took place in the crowd; that done, around sundown, I left to come, Cantepye, Moisson, and Lajoye with me. It was an hour after nightfall when we arrived here.

Le mardi XVIII^e, dès le matin, je party de céans, Cantepye et Lajoye, por aller à Vallongnes. Comme nous vinsmes au russeau de la Ferier, je rencontre ung boulenger de Vallongnes, nommé ........(sic), qui m'apportoyt des lettres du verdier de Vallongnes, qui contenoyent que Mons^r Davesnes et Mons^r de Bosroger, commissayres por vendre des boys, se trouvèroyent à ce matin à Barnavast, par quoy j'envoyé Cantepye à Vallongnes por recouvrer du gibier, et m'en allé, led. Lajoye avecques moy, chez le cappitaine du Teil que je trouvé en sa maison, et Gauvain Fleury et son filz et aultres charpentiers qui sieront des douvelles. Je desjeune céans, puys m'en allé en Barnavast ou se trouvèrent lesd. sieurs, le verdier de Vallongnes et Vastel, procureur; ilz virent les ventes, puys allèrent disner à Gonneville et je m'en vins céans.

Por du vin cleret et du gibier que Cantpye apporta de Vallongnes XVII s., et por deux potz de vin blanc sec que Jacques apporta de Cherbourg VI s. Tuesday the 28th, in the morning, I left here, Cantepye and Lajoye, to go to Valognes. As we came to the brook of La Ferier, I encountered a baker from Valognes, named .........., who brought me some letters from the forester of Valognes, that contained that Monsieur Davesnes and Monsieur de Bosroger, commissioners for the sale of the woods, found themselves in the morning at Barnavast, for which I sent Cantepye to Valognes to get some game, and went, the said Lajoye with me, to the Captain of Teil whom I found in his house, and Gauvain Fleury and his son and other carpenters who were sawing some staves¹. I dined here, then went to Barnavast wher I found the said lords, the forester of Valognes, and Vastel, attorney; they saw the woods that are to be cut², then went to dine at Gonneville and I came here.

The said day, after dinner, I left here, Cantepye with me, who was already returned from Valognes, and we went to la Férière, near the ditch at Roux, to wait for the said lord commissioners and the forester of Valognes to arrive here; they supped and slept here. For some claret wine and some game that Cantepye brought from Valognes 17 sous, and for two pots of dry white wine that Jacques brought from Cherbourg 6 sous 8 deniers and two pounds of candles 3 sous .......... 27 sous 8 deniers.

2. a "vente" in Normandy is a section of woods or forest to be cut for timber; it is part of a methodical system of managing resources. These woods would have belonged to the crown, and the rights to harvest them were what was being sold. The appearance of this word in the names of many of Goubervilles fields indicates that they were cleared from the forest in the Middle Ages.

Le lundi XXVII^e, je ne bougé de céans. Je fys vuyder l'estable aux vaches et parer en la court. Au soyer, apprès soupper, Cantepye revinst de Briquebec et me dist qu'il avoyt appoincté avec Adrien le Bailleul. Mons^r de Sct-Naser souppa et coucha céans.

Monday the 27th, I did not stir from here. I had the cow stable emptied out and arranged in the courtyard¹. In the evening, after supper, Cantepie came back from Briquebec and told me that he had appointed² with Adrien le Bailleul. Monsieur de St. Naser supped and slept here.

1. The classic arrangement of a French country house involved am enclosed courtyard through which one walked past stables, chicken coops, and manure piles until one came to the front door of the house. See this diagram based on the Maison Rustique.

Le dymenche XXVI^e, je ne bougé de céans. Thomas Castille, de Cosqueville, et Guillaume Le Magnen, du Teil, disnèrent céans. Je ne les peu appoincter et leur mys terme à dymenche, puys s'en allèrent. Il pleut fort tout le jor.

Sunday the 26th, I did not stir from here. Thomas Castille, of Cosqueville, and Guillaume Le Magnen, of Teil, dined here. I could not appoint ¹ and put and end to them on Sunday, then they went out. I rained heavily all day.

1. this appears to be a judicial proceeding, one where the parties deal with each other directly, without a lot of judicial overhead, to reach an agreement which is then registered.

Le sabmedi, XXV^e, je ne bougé de céans. Viron mydi, Symonnet partit por aller en Bessin vers Mons^r le lieutenant general et à Russy. Je luy baillé une douzaine de vitecos por porter à mon oncle et L s. por fère son voyage, car je ne sçavoys où il pourroyt recouvrer led s^r lieutenant.

Saturday the 25th, I did not stir from here. Around noon, Symonnet left to go to Bessin towards Monsieur the lieutenant general and to Russy. I gave him a dozen of [vitecos]¹ por porter a mon oncle and 50 sous to make his trip, because I did not know where he might find the said lieutenant.

Le vendredi XXIIII^e, je ne bougé de céans d'avecques mes tonneliers. Au matin je m'en allé, Lajoye avecques moy, au Clos-des-Ventes, et luy fys parer au pied des entes et oster les jetons. Comme nous etions la, arriva Guillaume Freret qui me demandé congé de prendre de la terre pres le moulin por fère l'astre d'un four. Des le matin, Candeleur et Cantepye s'en allèrent à Manneville por contraindre Adrien de Bailleul.

Friday the 24th, I did not move from here with my coopers. In the morning I went, Lajoye with me, to Clos-des-Ventes, and had him clear the base of the scions and remove the shoots¹. As we were there, arrived Guillaume Frert who asked me leave to take some of the earth near the mill to make the star(?)² of an oven. In the morning, Candeleur and Cantepye went to Manneville to constrain Adrien de Bailleul.

The said day, gave in the evening to Robin Launey and his companion, coopers, for four days that they were here. ............... 16 sous.

1. The scions are the base for grafted apples, and the suckers that grow from it need to be removed so that the graft can grow.
2. although this word means "star", I am sure it means something else in this context. One assumes this earth is clay.

Le jeudi XXIII^e, je ne bougé de céans d'avecques mes tonneliers. Dès le matin, Cantepye et Jehan Drouart furent chez Quentin Lecourt querir des ès de chesne por fère des fons à tonneau. Ilz en apportèrent dix ou douze qui n'avoyent que troys pieds de long checun. Symonnet et Moisson furent à tirer au couvert et tirerent deux cersereules. Chandeleur, sergent, souppa et coucha céans.

Led. jour, baillé à Jacquette, fille Jehan Feullye, et à Françoise, fille Giret Pyvain, por troys jours qu'elles ont esté céans por me fère des chemises, à checun XVIII d. ............. III d.

Thursday the 23rd, I did not move from here with my coopers. In the morning, Cantepye and Jehan Drouart were at Quentin Lecourt's to fetch some planks of oak to make the bottoms of the barrels. They brought ten or twelve that were only three feet long each. Symonnet and Moisson were shooting at Couvert and shot two [cersereules]. Chandeleur, sergeant, supped and slept here.

The said day, paid to Jaquette, daughter of Jehan Feullye, and to Françoise, daughter of Giret Pyvain, for three days that they were here to make me some shirts, to each 18 deniers ........ 3 d.¹

1. This is clearly an error in transcription. If each girl was paid 18 d, then the total was 36 d, or 3 sous.

Le mercredi XXII^e, apprès desjeuner, je allé à Sct-Pierres, Symonnet avecques moy. Venus la, je y trouve Cantepye qui avoyt couché à Gouberville. Je monstre au lieutenant de Sct-Sauveur, à maistre Jehan Binet et à maistre Guillaume Vastel, ung contract où Myaulx, de Gonneville, debvoyt estre signé.

Wednesday the 22nd, after breakfast I went to St. Pierre, Symonnet with me. Came there, I found Cantepye who had slept at Gouberville. I showed to the the lieutenant of St. Saveur, to master Jehan Binet and to master Guillaume Vastel, a contract where Myaulx, of Gonneville, ought to be signed.

The said day, I bought from Jehan Caulvin¹ five quarters of blanchet to make hose for Symonnet, 37 sous. After having talked to my godchild of Raffoville, to missire Guillaume Flamenc, to Harelle and several others, I bought from Sansonnet three combs and two little silver rings 10 sous, then I came, missire Jehan Auvre, Yvon Mesnage and Thomas Drouet with me. It was almost night when I arrived here. And soon after, Cantepye arrived, who was staying again a little at St. Pierre in order to pick up a notebook. For 4 [vitecos?] that he bought 65 sous. ............ 53 sous.

The said day, received from the hand of Canteype on the account of Phillipin Tocque, on his rent..... 21 sous 10 deniers.

The said day, paid to La Marchande² for two days that she was here to make me some shirts. ........ 12 deniers.

1. this would be John Calvin, in English, which amuses me. The famous one is from Noyon.
2. not clear if this is her surname or a role, "marchande" being feminine for "merchant."

Le mardi XXI^e, je ne bougé de céans. Apprès desjeuner, Cantepye alla à Gouberville pour fère remuer les plès qui estoyent termés à demain. Symonnet fut à Vallongnes fère contraindre Jehan Le Tourneur pour estre confronté contre Lefort, de Carneville. Por le salayre du sergent et por ung fer au petit cheval II s. VIII d. Viron mydi, Robin Launey et Gilles ....... son compagnon, tonneliers, et Françoys Girard, arrivèrent céans et Nocent que j'avoye hier envoyé querir lesd. tonneliers, lesquelz tonneliers, apprès avoyr reppeu, se misrent en besongne.

Tuesday the 21st, I did not move from here. After breakfast, Cantepye went to Gouberville to have moved the pleas that were to end tomorrow. Symonnet was at Vallognes to have constrained¹ Jehan Le Tourneur to be confronted with Lefort, of Carneville. For the salry of the sergeant and for a shoe for the little horse 2 sous 8 deniers. Around noon, Robin Launey and Gilles ...... his companion, coopers, and Francois Girard, arrived here and Nocent that I had yesterday sent to fetch the said coopers, which toopers, after having rested, set themselves to work.

Le lundi XX^e, je ne bougé de céans. Viron une heure avant jor, Cantepye et Symonnet revindrent de Clitorp ou ilz estoyent allés hier apprès souper. Viron une heure de soleil, Cantepye alla à Cherbourg sur le pitel de Sct-Naser, sur lequel Jehan LeNepveu, serviteur à Sct-Naser, estoyt hier venu céans. Viron neuf heures, Gilles Lenfant l'arpenteur arriva et me dist que Mons^r Davernes seroyt, le mercredi 29 de ce moys, à Vallongnes.

Led. jor, au matin, je fus chez Auvré por envoyer Nocent, serviteur de céans, coucher à Magneville, et luy fis bailler ung cheval por apporter demain les ostilz de tonneliers. Je fys semer six boisseaulx de fourment à la Haute-Vente. Por deux membres de boef et ung quartier de mouton que Cantepye apporta de Cherbourg XII s. ............ XII s.

Monday the 20th, I did not move from here. Around one hour before dawn, Cantepye and Symonnet came back from Clitorp where they had gone yesterday after supper. Around one hour after sunrise, Cantepye went to Cherbourg on the [pitel]¹ of St-Naser, on which Jehan LeNepveu, servant to St-Naser, had yesterday come here. Around nine o'clock, Gilles Lenfant the surveyor arrived and told me that Monsieur Davernes will be, on Wednesday 29 of this month, at Vallongnes.

The said day, in the morning, I was at Auvre's in order to send Nocent, servant from here, to sleep at Magneville, and had him deliver a horse to carry the coopers' tools tomorrow. I had six bushels of wheat sown at La Haute-Vent. For two joints of beef and a quarter of mutton that Cantepye brought from Cherbourg 12 s. ...... 12 s.

Le dymenche XIX^e, je ne sorty poinct de ma chambre, por ce que je me trouvoys mal. Au retour de la messe, Symonnet m'apporta une rose blanche que missire Jehan Auvrey m'envoyet. Avant que me levasse, Martin Le Galloys, de Saulsemesnil, vinst por parler à moy; mais je ne parlé poinct à luy por ce que j'estoys malade. Martin Loyr estoyt avecques luy, comme on me dist. Apprès soupper, Cantepye et Symonnet allerent à Clitourp, por recouvrer une vache que ung homme de La Hague avoyt perdue. Apprès disner, Moisson alla coucher à la Varengère et mena une chienne chaulde por fère couvrir à ung des chiens de mons^r de Magneville.

Sunday the 19th, I did not go out of my bedroom, because I found myself ill. On returning from the mass, Symonnet brought me a white rose that messire Jehan Aurvry sent me. Before I got up, Martin Le Galloys, of Saulsemesnil, came to speak to me; but I did not speak to him because I was sick. Martin Loyr was with him, as they told me. After supper, Cantepie and Symonnet went to Clitourp, to retrieve a cow that a man from La Hague had lost. After dinner, Moisson went to sleep at Varengere and took a bitch in heat to have it covered by one of the dogs of Monsieur de Magneville.

The said day, received from Tassin Quentin, thirty sous tournois for the fattening of four pigs for Lecrivain, of Rétoville, who had put to my peusson¹ and fifteen sous tournois from Francois Doisnar for two pigs ................ XLV s.

The said day, received of the said Doisnar 3 sous on 18 sous remaining from the last Martinmas term ........ 3 s.

The said day, paid to Robine Feullye 20 s. remaining of what I owe her for her work, from St. Mark's Day [April 25] to the day that she went from here, and leaving she remains quit of what she might owe in rent here or preceding the day of Michaelmas past. ........ 2 s.

1. peusson -- the hereditary right to graze pigs in an oak woods. The right could be sold to others, as Goubervilles seems to do often.

Le sabmedi XVIII^e, je ne bougé de céans. Apprès disner, Symonnet alla à Vallongnes porter à maistre Pierres Jehanne, procureur por le Roy, aud. Vallongnes, troys lièvres por ce qu'il faisoyt demain le banquet de la bienvenue de sa femme. Viron neuf heures, je fus chez Auvrey por envoyer leur serviteur Nocent à Magneville querir des tonneliers, et de la m'en vins à Henry Gardin, que je trouvé à sa grange, et luy dis qu'il contragnist Françoys Doysnard por le reste de ce qu'il me doybt. Cantepye revinst au soyer de Briquebec.

Led. jor, apprès disner, je m'en allé à Tourlaville, Moisson avecques moy, chez Philippes Truffer, affin qu'il me gardast le marc de ses pommes d'amerdoulx, por en avoyr les pepins. Nous en revinsmes par chez petit Jehan Luce, que nous trouvasmes en son pressoyer, et grand Jehan Luce qui y pilloyt. J'achatté dud. grand Jehan des pommes de menuel estant encor aulx arbres par XVIII deniers le rasière. Martin Luce et led. petit Jehan y estoyent presens.

Saturday the 18th, I did not move from here. After dinner, Symonnet went to Vallongnes to bring to master Pierre Jehanne, attorney for the King, at the said Vallognes, three hares because he was putting on a banquet tomorrow for the welcome of his wife¹. Around nine o'clock, I was at Auvrey's in order to send their servant Nocent to Magneville to fetch some coopers, and from there I went to Henry Gardin, whom I found at his barn, and he said he had constrained François Doisnard for the remainder that he owed me. Cantepye came back in the evening from Briquebec.

The said day, after dinner, I went to Tourlaville, Moisson with me, to Philippe Truffer, so that he saved me the pulp of his bittersweet apples, in order to have the seeds. We came back by way of the house of little Jean Luce, whom we found at his press, and big Jean Luce was crushing there. I bought from the said big Jean the [small?] apples being still on the trees for 18 deniers the bushel. Martin Luce and the said little Jean were present there.

Le vendredi XVII^e, je ne bougé de céans. Tout le jor il fist fort mauvays temps, et principalment sur le soyer; la grosse pluye me surprinst à la Perruque, Guillaume Berger avecques moy. Nous prinsmes le couvert chez Varin, à l'hostel Barrier, où nous trouvasmes la Chigorne et Letice, lesquelles se voulloyent entrebattre, et ne tint pas à nous qu'elles ne se prinsent au poil.

Led. jor au matin, viron neuf heures, j m'en allé chez Mesnage. Nous en allasmes de la pourmener au Clos-des-Ventes, Yvon Mesnage avecques moy, et me conta que Nicollas Levesque avoyt voulu achatter de Bunel, de Cosqueville, une condition de l'heritage, sur led. Mesnage, touchant sur ce que la mere dud. Bunel à en ceste parroisse. Guillaume Mesnage vinst au soyer por raccoutrer mes bottes et les Symonnet. Je luy donné I s. et Symonnet ung aultre, de l'argent qu'il avoyent gaigné de Moisson à jouer à la chause.

Friday the seventeenth, I did not stir from here. All day it was very bad weather, and principally in the evening; the heavy rain surprised me at La Perruque, Guillaume Berger with me. We took cover at Varin's, at the hotel Barrier, where we found La Chigorne and Letice, who¹ wanted to fight each other, and it was not due to us that they only pulled each other's hair.

The said day in the morning, around nine o'clock, I went to the Mesnage place. We went from there toward Clos-des-Ventes, Yvon Mesnage with me, and told me that Nicollas Levesque had wanted to buy from Bunel, of Cosqueville, a term of his inheritence, on the said Mesnage, concerning something that the mother of the said Bunel had in this parish. Guillauem Mesnage came in the evening to repair my boots and Simonnet's. I gave him 1 sou and Symonnet another, from the money that he had won from Moisson playing at [chause]².

Le jeudi XVI^e, je ne bougé de céans. Missire Guillaume Le Flament et Thomas Castille, de Cosqueville, Guillaume Le Magnen, du Teil, et Thomas Drouet disnèrent céans. Nous debvions appoincter led. Castille et Magnen, ce que ne fismes. Ilz s'en retournèrent apprès disner, viron sur le deux heures. Cantepye s'en alla coucher chez son pere por aller, comme il disoyt, demain à Briquebec exécuter Adrien de Bailleul. Assés tost apprès, Symonnet, Thomas Drouet et Moisson s'en allerent à la haye de Digoville, au juc des ramiers, sur le soleil couchant; il se prinst à tonner et plouvoyer demesurément et dura l'impétuousité de la pluye plus d'une heure, et furent fort moullés en leur revenant. Guillaume Le Magnen vinst quand et moy au moulin et chez le marescha, d'ou nous estions revenus avant la pluye. Il souppa céans.

Thursday the 16th, I did not stir from here. Missire Guillaume Le Flament and Thomas Castille, of Cosqueville, Guillaume Le Magnen, of Teil, and Thomas Drouet dined here. We must appoint¹ the said Castille and Magnen, this was not done. They returned after dinner, around two o'clock. Cantepye went to sleep at this father's house, in order to go, as he said, tomorrow to Briquebec to constrain²Adrien de Bailleul. Soon after, Symonnet, Thomas Drouet and Moisson went to the hedge at Digovile, to the perch of the wood pigeons, at sundown; it thundered and rained enormously and the torrential rain lasted more than an hour, and [they] were very wet when they came back. Guillaume Le Magnen came with me to the mill and the horse doctor, from where we were returned before the rain. He supped here.

1. I have changed this translation since it was first made, since "appoincter" had the usage in the 16th c. of a judicial proceeding rather than one of its modern usages, of to pay a salary. This makes more sense in the light of later entries using the same term. Gouberville spent an awful lot of his time at the law.

2. this translation has changed as well. One of the modern legal usages of the verb "contraindre" is translated into English as "distrain", which generall involves executing a court order. However, in the light of later entries this month it would appear that Cantepye is just setting up a judicial proceeding that will be recorded on the 27th. Probably the most equivalent translation in most of its appearances would be "subpoena", but I opted for translating it more literally until I am sure of that.

Le mercredi XV^e, je ne bougé de céans. Je fys semer à la Haulte-Vente six boisseaulx de fourment par Gaultier Birette. Cantepye fut à Sct-Pierres por mon procès contre Lefort et contre Planque. Por ung mémorial et sa despense............... II s.

Je trouvé led. s^r de Hemevez à nostre logis, lequel me dist qu'il avoyt achatté cinquante boisseaulx de glan à Yvetot, que le Verdier de Vallongnes luy avoyt faict arrester. Je ne beu ne mangé à Vallongnes. Les vicontes de Vallongnes et Sct-Sauveur et Le Berceur plaiderent en ballyage por les biens des soubz-age du feu s^r de Pierreville. J'acchatté de la carrelle, unes petites estramires? d'argent et ung passement de soye rouge X s. Il estoyt presque soleil couché quand j'arrivé céans.

Tuesday the 14th, in the morning, I went to Vallongnes, Cantepye with me; it was 10 o'clock when I arrived there. I found the said Seigneur de Hemevez at our lodgings, who told me that he had bought fifty bushels of acorns at Yvetot, that the Forester of Vallongnes had had held for him. I did not drink or eat at Vallongnes. The vicounts of Vallongnes and St-Sauveur and Le Berceur sued in the bailiff's court for the under-age?¹ property of the late Seigneur de Pierreville. I bought some limestone blocks², a few little [estramires?]³ of silver and a braid of red silk 10 s. It was nearly sundown when I arrived here.

1. No idea about "biens des soubz-age". "biens" is goods, property. "soubz-age" is literally "under-age." I can't find another word that "age" could be.
2. there wasn't much in the way of easily cut stone in Gouberville's area, so it had to be brought from nearby regions. Limestone was preferred because it was easy to quarry.
3. the original transcription is unclear on whether this is the word. I wonder if it is "estamines", which would be strainers. But what would he want with little silver strainers?

Vastel, procureur, et Oliver Pilet, chez le s^r du Vast, que nous trouvasmes en sa maison, et comme nous estions devant sa porte, Carneville, mareschal du guet à Cherbourg, me vinst saluer et me dist qu'il estoyt venu au Vast pour voyer s'il y avoyt des bestes noyres au boys de Bosneel. Ce faict, nous allasmes, led. s^r du Vast avec nous, visiter led. boys, selon qu'il avoyt esté ordonné mardi dernier, affin de contraindre ceulx qui ont terres joygnant aud. boys à les clorre par devers icelluy. Quand nous heusmes tournye tout au tour dud. boys, je m'en revins; il estoyt viron une heure apprès mydi quand je arrivée céans. Je ne mangé poinct chez Vastel et ne descendi poinct au Vast.

Led. jor, Symonnet fut à Cherbourg charcher de la futaille, il n'en trouva point. Il achatta deux boisseaulx de sel VI s. et du cuyr por les garsons por VI s. ......................... XII s.

Monday the 13th, at daybreak, I went, Cantepye with me, to Berteauville's place, at Torquetville, whom I found in his house eating breakfast, and the treasurer Megret with him; from there we went, the said Vastel, attorney, and Oliver Pilet, to the Seigneur du Vast, whom we found at his house, and as we were before his door, Carneville, marshall of the watch at Cherbourg, came to salute me and told me that he had come to Vast to see if there were boars in the woods of Bosneel. That done, we went, the said Seigneur du Vast with us, to visit the said woods, according to how he had been ordered last Tuesday, in order to restrain those who have land adjoining the said woods to close them off in front of them. When we had toured all around the said woods, I came back; it was around one hour after noon when I arrived here. I did not eat at Vastel's and did not stay at Vast.

The said day, Symonnet was at Cherbourg to look for barrels, he did not find any. He bought two bushels of salt 6 s. and some leather for the boys 6 s. ................... 12 s.

Le dymenche XII^e, je ne bougé de céans. Estant à la messe, missire Jehan Auvrey me donna une rose blanche cueullye ce jor en son jardin. Yvon Cacharf disna céans et surnommé Blanche, serviteur de Baucquet.

Sunday the 12th, I did not stir from here. Being at mass, Missire Jehan Auvrey gave me a white rose cut today from his garden.¹ Yvon Cacharf dined here and [one] surnamed Blanche, servant of Baucquet.

1. This is quite extraordinary, because European roses of the time were not remontant. That is a characteristic that was only introduced in the 19th c. through hybridizing with east Asian species (which in turn were not generally hardy in northern latitudes).

Saturday the 11th, Saint Martin's day, I did not stir from here. In the morning Quentin Lecourt came here, because I had recognition of his sign postponed. Thomas Castille, of Cosqueville, found himself there, who dined there and Guillaume Magnen; Cantepye was at Cherbourg. For a quarter of mutton and a joint of beef 8 s. and three quarts of dry wine 5 s. ............... 13 s.
